Recent Changes Make Military
Naturalizations Easier
On May 24, 2007, US Citizenship
and Immigration Services
(“USCIS”) issued a Fact
Sheet regarding U.S. military
naturalization to citizenship
applications. Lawful Permanent
Residents, with limited exceptions,
typically wait approximately 3 to 5
years to apply for U.S.
citizenship. Lawful Permanent
Residents who serve in the U.S. Armed
Forces, may apply for U.S.
citizenship upon completion of 1 year
active duty service and the service
member is not charged a fee. A
Lawful Permanent Resident service
member who dies in combat may receive
posthumous citizenship. A
foreign national spouse, child or
parent of a service member who dies
as a result of combat may file for
citizenship within 2 years of that
service member’s
death.
